Charity card

I, like so many of us, am in awe of the selfless individual commitments and sacrifices by so many, at this challenging time, to keep our treasured National Health Service delivering the highest levels of care, and would like to play my part in showing appreciation, and giving a little back. £1 of every NHS Rainbow card sale will be donated to ‘NHS Charities Together’ www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk

The card is a print of a one-off, original embroidery I created for an Instagram challenge, and inspired by the work of so many healthcare key-workers.

A bit about me - in my previous life (‘BC’; before children), I was a textile designer in the Fashion and Textiles industry. I created womenswear garment samples which were embellished with machine and hand embroidery, beading, applique, and prints. I had forgotten how much I love working with embroidery threads to create French Knots, Blanket stitch and Chain stitch – which figure extensively in this design. All my work is inspired by personal stories, observations and experiences.

The cards are available from both my Etsy and Folksy shops.

Just a Card Indie Week

The Independent Alternative to Black Friday!

JUST A CARD - Indie Week is about bringing the might of the JUST A CARD community together to shout from the rooftops about the importance of valuing and buying from artists, makers and independent shops and small businesses during the crucial Christmas period.  An antidote to the fast-purchase culture of Black Friday, JUST A CARD - Indie Week is your chance to shine, your opportunity to celebrate and share your work, stories and communities, both on Social Media and in the wider world. Last year’s JUST A CARD - Indie Week was a record breaker with thousands of people across the world taking part, with the campaign being featured across the BBC, and other major press outlets.

Everyone is warmly welcome to be a part of JUST A CARD - Indie Week, wherever you are in the world and whether you’re an independent yourself or simply value and love them. During these challenging times the more we use our collective voice to raise awareness of how incredible independents are, the more everyone will benefit.

#MeetTheMakerWeek

2nd - 7th November 2020

I'm looking forward to taking part in this year's Instagram challenge!

#MeetTheMakerWeek 2020 is a 6 day Instagram Challenge, set by @Joanne Hawker
'This year, as you may already know, the challenge has been brought forward by a whole month! This year has been one we won’t forget in a hurry and has brought with it a number of challenges. Financial stress, struggles getting hold of stock and the postal system being under immense pressure with the extra work load and less staff to get your makes to their new homes! So, this year, lets encourage people to start shopping early. Spread the cost. Help makers and shop owners manage their stock levels. Reduce stress (hopefully!). And give yourself plenty of time for things to arrive!
The challenge kicks off on 2nd November 2020 and will run for 6 days. Absolutely anyone can join in, in fact, the more the merrier! All you have to do is post a daily photo to Instagram relating to the prompt of that day and tag it with #MeetTheMakerWeek to take part. It’s that simple!' Joanne Hawker

21st - 27th September 2020

'Thinking of You Week is a special week that harnesses the emotional power of greeting cards to create a wave of love, caring and happiness.

Sending handwritten cards generates positive feelings and wellbeing. Science has shown that receiving a handwritten card creates a lovely warm positive boost.

The fact that you have spent the time to make or choose a card, write it, and send it makes the person receiving it feel far more special and cared for than receiving instant texts, emails or other social media messages.

Cards are displayed in the home and many are kept for years, providing a reminder of the person that has sent it and of your relationship with them.'

Thinking Of You Week is brought to you by the Greeting Card Association

The Greeting Card Association, GCA, is the trade body for the British greeting card community. An independent not-for-profit organisation owned by its members, it provides help, advice, support, specialist resources and membership services.

May 2020

I’m joining in with @lucymartinembroidery ‘NHS EMBROIDERY CHALLENGE’ to show my love and appreciation for our incredible National Health Service on Instagram.
In my previous life (BC; before children), I was a textile designer in the Fashion and Textiles industry. I created womenswear garment samples which were embellished with machine and hand embroidery, beading, applique, and prints. I had forgotten how much I love working with embroidery threads to create French Knots, Blanket stitch and Chain stitch, all of which I have used in my embroidery of the NHS logo.

'National Send A Card To A Friend Day on February 7th reminds us to send friendly cheer through the mail. We do that by sending a note or message on a card to the friends we hold dear. Throughout the year, we often think about our friends. We wonder how they are, miss them and remember fond memories of times shared.' National Day Calendar

#cardtokeep

June 2019

'As part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, the GCA has launched the #cardtokeep campaign, which urges people to share their special greeting card memories through featuring images of their treasured cards on the dedicated Instagram site, as well as the stories behind them'.

Greeting Cards Maintain Sisterly Bonds During Separation:

This is an article in which I shared some of the greetings cards I have kept over the years, and the stories behind them.

"If everyone who'd complimented our beautiful gallery had bought 'just a card' we'd still be open"

'The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to support, value and buy from artists, designers, independent shops and small businesses by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even 'just a card' are so vital to their prosperity and survival.

The campaign came about when Artist & Designer Sarah Hamilton saw the quote "If everyone who'd complimented our beautiful gallery had bought 'just a card' we'd still be open" by store keepers who'd recently closed their gallery. This prompted a call to action! Designer/Makers, independent shops, galleries and small businesses need a voice. People seldom realise the considerable costs involved in exhibiting at design shows or keeping a shop open. Stand fees, power, materials, wages etc need to be met before even a penny of profit can be realised. Running a shop is often a labour of love. Without dedication and passion, and crucially sales, it would be another boarded up eyesore.' Just a card
